Latch Lock

Project Details:

The Latch Lock™ is a patent-pending, no-drill locking device that I designed to secure U.S. military surplus metal ammunition cans and storage containers.

Every other ammo can locking solution on the market requires drilling into the containers lid or body, which destroys the factory air-tight, water-tight seal it was built with. I designed a one-piece steel plate that clamps onto the outside of the can in seconds, using an engineered offset lip that grips the lid with no drilling, welding or hardware required.

Once installed, it accepts a standard padlock through an integral vertical tab, giving the can a secure locking point in a design with no small parts to lose. Latch Lock is currently the only no-drill locking device made.

The finished product is manufactured from solid carbon steel and finished with a black powder coat, made in Richmond, Virginia.

I handled the process end to end: concept sketches, engineering the formed-steel geometry and tolerances, coordinating fabrication and finish work. As well as building the brand identity, packaging and Shopify ecommerce website.

Specifications:
  • Single-piece formed carbon steel construction, no fasteners or moving parts
  • Black powder coat finish for corrosion and weather resistance
  • Custom-engineered two-bend offset lip that clamps the can lid without drilling
  • Integral vertical tab sized for standard padlock shackles
  • Overall dimensions: 3.800″ W x 4.600″ H
  • Also designed the retail packaging
  • Patent-pending design, made in the USA
